I run into the odd members who because they can adjust the tracking angle on their cart think that they are now DOCTOR VINYL. That would be rude.īut that we need to be on the watch out for overestimating ourselves. My point wasn't that you were currently being afflicted by it. The Dunning-Kruger effect does seems to be rampant among."The Lights are on but nobody is home crowd." It is worse in the Pro audio industry where every kid in his Mother's basement thinks he is Sir George Martin. I have seen this nonsense over and over again. They don't even bother to check weather the facts in the video are even true. But because you watched a 20 minute video on Utube you now consider yourself to be an expert in Roman history. In other words sir you could be real intelligent but be ignorant in Roman history. The effect can and does happen to everyone.ĭunning- Kruger effect, is a cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a given intellectual or social domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain relative to objective criteria or to the performance of their peers or of people in general. It is not "dumb people evaluating themselves." This is incorrect and a popular misconception over the web these days. You have misunderstood the dunning-kruger effect. I am again blown away at the level of vinyl cleanup you guys do. Better to remove the hum later than mix you consumer and pro levels up. If your table and phone preamp are humming then talk with them and ask them nicely to stop the 60 / 50 hz hum. In that case you can use 1/4 TRS balanced lines. (Wetting up my tee-shirt)Ĭheck you manual! Some interfaces will only go to Pro levels with XLR connections. If you guys don't take my advice I am gonna cry! Here come the tears. Otherwise you are not doing your needle drops any favours! Just set your switch to consumer level and use whatever cables you want. If you have a - 10 dBv / +4 dbu switch on your audio interface then go crazy. This is why I am against people trying to use balanced lines with consumer equipment. Rember that advice about recording at - 18 dbfs RMS and not peaking over - 6 dbfs PEAK when recording at 24 bit? If you mix your pro and consumer levels up forget it. If it is the output of a phono preamp or a cassette deck it is 99% of the time gonna be at the consumer level of - 10 dBv. If your audio interface senses an XLR or even a balanced TRS 1/4 connector it will switch to the professional level of +4 dbu. Not just different level but a different scale. Consumer nominal level is −10 dBV, and the nominal level for pro equipment is +4 dbu. The ones that don't have separate switch/button for consumer and professional levels pay heed ye to my words. Better off to spend more money on the turntable, cart and phone preamp then on software and a USB audio interface.įor those using consumer audio interfaces. Sure fancy software will take away noise and hum but it will not get lost detail your needle didn't pick up. It would be like buying $3 bottle of Artic Spring water to mix a with Tang crystals. But I wouldn't bother using it on a cheap playback system. But a $250 plastic turntable from the 80's with a $100 cart will not. A well cleaned record played on a a good audiophile table and MC cart will reveal a lot of information. But the corner of the smiles are at the the frequency extremes.
